Your Electrical Panel: Age, Capacity, and What It Actually Means
Your electrical panel is the one major system in the house that most owners have never actually looked at. The furnace makes noise. The water heater has a visible tank. The panel is a gray box in a basement or a hallway closet that gets opened twice a decade, usually in the dark.
It is also the system that quietly sets the ceiling on everything else you might want to do to the house. Not because it is failing, but because it has a number on it, and that number was chosen by whoever built the place based on what a household used at the time.
This is an inventory exercise, not a warning. It belongs in the same folder as the ages of your furnace and your water heater.
Before anything: the one safety line
Open the outer door of the panel, the hinged cover with the breaker directory on the inside of it.
Do not remove the inner metal plate that the breaker handles poke through. That plate is the deadfront, and behind it are conductors that stay energized even with the main breaker off, because the utility feed lands ahead of the main. Everything in this article can be learned with the outer door and a phone camera.
Reading the label
Inside that door, or on the panel itself, there is a printed label. It is not designed to be friendly, but it holds four useful things.
The manufacturer and model. Across the top, usually with a catalog number. Worth photographing even if it means nothing to you today.
The main breaker rating. This is the number that matters most. It is the size of your electrical service, in amps, and it is almost always stamped directly on the handle of the largest breaker, usually at the top or bottom of the panel: 100, 150, 200. If there is no single main breaker and instead a row of six large breakers, you have an older split-bus arrangement, and the rating will be on the label rather than a handle.
The number of circuit spaces. Often written as something like "20 spaces, 40 circuits," meaning twenty full-size slots that will accept up to forty circuits if half-height breakers are allowed. Whether they are allowed is printed on the label, and not every panel permits them in every slot.
The bus rating and voltage. Usually 120/240 volts single phase in a house. Fine to just photograph.
Take the label picture, take a second picture of the whole breaker layout with the directory visible, and put both in the same folder where you keep the data plates from the rest of the house. If you are new to the property, the first thirty days after closing is exactly when this is easiest to do.
What service size means in practice
Amperage is not a quality rating. A 100 amp panel is not worse than a 200 amp panel, it is smaller, and small is only a problem relative to what you ask it to carry.

The practical translation: 100 amps in a house with a gas furnace, a gas water heater, and a gas range is not a deficiency, it is a match between the service and the house. That same 100 amps in a house where someone wants a Level 2 charger, an induction range, and a heat pump is a real constraint, and it shows up as an estimate rather than as a failure.
Two different ways to run out of room
These get confused constantly, and they have completely different price tags.
Running out of physical spaces
Every slot has a breaker in it and there is nowhere to land a new circuit. This is sometimes solvable cheaply. If the label permits half-height breakers in the positions you need, an electrician may be able to free up slots. If not, a subpanel fed from the existing panel adds spaces without touching the service size. Neither gives you more total capacity. They give you more places to connect.
Running out of amperage
Total demand approaches what the service can deliver. This is the expensive one, because fixing it means a new service: usually a new panel, new service conductors, often utility coordination, a new meter socket, permits, and an inspection.
An electrician tells you which of these you have by running a load calculation, a standard method that adds up the fixed loads in the house with defined allowances rather than guessing. Pay for that calculation before paying for anything else, because the answer is frequently "you have room, you just need spaces," and that is a much smaller job.
What modern loads actually ask for
If you are considering any of these, this is the part that matters. These are typical circuit sizes. Your equipment's data plate is the authority, and it will differ.

Two things fall out of that table.
First, a single modern addition can consume a large fraction of a 100 amp service on paper. That does not automatically mean the service is too small, because a load calculation accounts for the fact that things do not all run at once, and because many EV chargers can be configured to draw less. It does mean the question needs an answer before the equipment is ordered.
Second, the order you do things in changes the cost. If you are already planning a heat pump and may eventually want a charger, pricing the service work once beats pricing it twice. Panel capacity belongs on the same planning sheet as HVAC service life and water heater age, because those replacements are the ones most likely to change what you ask the panel to do.
Age, and the honest version of the brand question
An older panel is not automatically unsafe. Plenty of mid-century 100 amp panels sit in dry basements doing exactly what they were designed to do, with correct breakers and no signs of heat. Age alone is not a verdict.
There are exceptions worth knowing by name, because they come up in inspections and occasionally on insurance questionnaires. Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok panels, Zinsco and Sylvania Zinsco panels, and Challenger panels have been the subject of long-running safety concerns, and many home inspectors flag them on sight. I am not going to characterize the underlying engineering dispute, because it is genuinely disputed. What I will say plainly is that if your label reads one of those names, it is worth asking an electrician about during a visit you were already paying for.
Two other era items come up in the same conversation. Fuses instead of breakers are not inherently dangerous, but a fuse panel is old by definition and fuses can be defeated by installing the wrong size. Aluminum branch wiring, used in some homes roughly from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s on ordinary 15 and 20 amp circuits, is about the walls rather than the panel, but it is a known concern with known remediation methods and is commonly excluded from coverage.
Signs that justify a call rather than a note in a folder: scorching or melted plastic around a breaker, a burning smell, a breaker that trips repeatedly on a circuit that has not changed, or rust and water staining inside the enclosure. Those are not planning items.
What a service contract does and does not touch here
Here is the flat version.
A home service contract covers mechanical and electrical failure of covered items from normal use. On the electrical side that generally means the panel and its breakers, interior wiring, switches, and receptacles failing in ordinary service. Coverage varies by plan and by state, and the contract's own definition controls, not a summary on a website including this one.
What is essentially never covered, and you should assume the exclusion is there until you read otherwise:
- Capacity upgrades. A 100 amp service that is too small for what you want to add is not broken. It is undersized. Nothing covers not enough.
- Code upgrades and permits. If a repair triggers a requirement to bring something up to current code, that work is typically excluded or capped.
- Whole-house rewiring, and known-hazard panels or aluminum branch wiring, which are frequently named exclusions.
- Surge and lightning damage, which is the homeowners insurance conversation instead.
- Improper prior installation, meaning work done wrong before you owned the contract.
- Pre-existing conditions. If it is already failing, it is not covered. Every legitimate contract also carries a waiting period, commonly around 30 days, before coverage begins at all. That exists so the product cannot be bought on Monday for a problem that started Sunday.
Which produces a simple rule. Coverage is a plan for a working system. Capacity is a project. They do not substitute for each other.
The decision, stated even handedly
If your panel is modern, correctly sized for the house as used, and no large load is coming, there is nothing here to act on. Note the numbers and move on.
If your panel is older but sound and a surprise repair bill would not hurt much, self-insuring the electrical system is a completely legitimate choice. It has relatively few moving parts and, in a dry location, a long service life.
If several systems are in their second decade, an older panel among them, and a bad month would land on a credit card rather than on savings, that is different arithmetic, and it is personal rather than universal. Anyone telling you the answer is always yes is selling instead of advising.
What to write down today
- The main breaker number. 100, 150, 200. One photograph.
- The manufacturer name from the label.
- Spaces used versus spaces available. Count the empty slots.
- Whether anything on your five-year list is electric. A charger, a heat pump, an induction range, a shop.
That converts the vaguest system in the house into four facts, and every conversation you have with an electrician afterward gets shorter.
