Appliance Lifespans, Ranked, and What Replacement Involves
Appliances do not fail randomly. They fail in a rough order, and the order is knowable.
If you know which of yours is closest to the end, you get to make a decision on a Tuesday with three quotes in hand. If you do not, you make the same decision on a Saturday with a puddle on the floor or a defrosting freezer, and it costs more every time.
So here is the ranking, longest life to shortest, with the thing that actually ends each one and the judgment call on repairing it.

Typical ranges, as always, and use matters enormously. A washer running two loads a week and a washer running fourteen are not on the same clock even if they were bought the same day.
What actually ends each one
Gas range or cooktop
The longest-lived appliance in most kitchens, because it is the least electronic. Burners, valves, and an igniter are all replaceable, cheap, and available for a long time. Most gas ranges are not replaced because they broke. They are replaced because somebody remodeled the kitchen.
Repair or replace: repair, almost always, unless it is a high-end unit whose proprietary control board has gone and the board is no longer made.
Standalone freezer
Simple, sealed, and it barely gets opened, which is exactly why it lasts. The serviceable parts are the door gasket and the thermostat. What ends it is a sealed-system or compressor failure.
Repair or replace: gasket and thermostat, repair. Sealed system on an older unit, replace. This is also the appliance whose failure costs you the contents, so knowing its age pays twice.
Electric range or oven
Bake and broil elements are inexpensive and among the easiest parts in the house to swap. The expensive components are the control board and, on a smooth-top model, the ceramic surface itself.
Repair or replace: elements, repair without hesitating. A cracked ceramic top on an older range frequently approaches the cost of a new range, which makes it a replacement conversation.
Refrigerator
The failures arrive in two tiers. The common tier is annoying and fixable: ice makers, which are the most-repaired component in most kitchens, door gaskets, defrost heaters and timers, condenser fans, and control boards. The terminal tier is the sealed system, meaning the compressor and the refrigerant circuit.
The cheapest life extension is also the one nobody does: pull it out once a year and vacuum the condenser coils. A coil packed with dust makes the compressor run hot and long, which is precisely the thing that ends the appliance.
Repair or replace: anything in the first tier on a unit under ten years old, repair. A sealed system failure past ten years is usually a replacement. Built-in and column refrigerators are a different economic class entirely and get repaired much further into their lives, because replacement means cabinetry.
Clothes dryer
Mechanically the simplest large appliance you own. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, and heating elements are all serviceable and inexpensive, which is why a dryer can be kept alive a long time by anyone willing to do it. What genuinely ends one is a drum bearing, or the owner deciding to replace the pair.
The single biggest thing that shortens a dryer's life is a restricted vent, and it is also a fire risk. Clean the entire vent run to the outside once a year, not just the lint screen. A dryer working against a blocked duct runs longer, hotter, and cycles its thermal components constantly.
Repair or replace: repair generously. Dryers reward it.
Clothes washer
Front-load machines end on the door boot seal, the drain pump, and eventually the tub bearings. Bearing failure on a sealed outer tub is often uneconomical because the repair is effectively rebuilding the machine. Top-load machines end on the drive system or transmission.
Two maintenance notes that matter more than they sound like they do. Level the machine, because an out-of-balance washer destroys its own bearings. And look at the supply hoses. Rubber hoses fail, and a washer failure is a wet failure at full house pressure. Braided stainless hoses cost very little and have a date on them.
Repair or replace: pumps and seals, repair. Bearings on a machine past eight years, replace.
Dishwasher
Circulation and drain pumps, the door latch and seal, and the control board. In hard water, scale is the quiet killer of the whole spray system. Racks rust, which is cosmetic until a tine punctures the tub liner.
Repair or replace: the economics turn against repair faster here than anywhere else on the list, because a service call plus a pump plus labor runs up against the price of a new machine quickly. Past nine years, most significant failures are a replacement.
Garbage disposal
Motor bearings, a jammed or corroded impeller, and eventually the housing rusting through and dripping under the sink. A leaking disposal is not a repair. The shell is the appliance.
Repair or replace: almost always replace. Units are inexpensive enough that a service call plus parts rarely pencils out. A jam is worth clearing first, since the reset button and the hex key on the bottom fix a surprising percentage of "dead" disposals.
Over-the-range microwave
Door interlock switches are the most common failure and are inexpensive. The magnetron is usually the end of the story. This is the shortest-lived built-in in the kitchen, partly because it lives above a heat source.
Repair or replace: door switches on a newer unit, repair. A failed magnetron is typically a replacement, and the real cost is the awkward overhead install rather than the appliance.
Sump pump
The shortest life on the list, and the one with the worst failure characteristics. The float switch fails more often than the motor does, and the entire thing fails silently. A sump pump gives you no indication it has died until the moment it is needed, which is the exact moment you cannot do anything about it.
What to do: pour a bucket of water into the pit quarterly and confirm the pump kicks on and shuts off. Look at the discharge line outside for a clog or a freeze. Check the check valve. And know the age, because past seven years this is a plan-a-replacement item rather than a wait-and-see one. A battery backup or a water-powered backup is worth considering in any finished basement.
Repair or replace: replace. It is not an expensive appliance and it is the one where a failure costs you the most.
The repair-or-replace judgment
The rule of thumb most people have heard: if the repair costs more than roughly half the price of a comparable new unit, replace it. That is a reasonable starting point, but it ignores the variable that matters most, which is how much life is left.
A better version, and it is easy arithmetic. Take the repair estimate and divide it by the number of years you realistically expect to get out of the appliance afterward. Compare that to the price of a new one divided by its full expected life. If the repair is costing you more per year than starting over, the repair is the expensive option even though it is the smaller number today.
Three things people underweight:
The second repair. Every component in a twelve year old appliance is twelve years old, and fixing one does not make the others younger. A significant repair in an appliance's final third is frequently the first of two.
Parts availability. Generic components stay available essentially forever. Proprietary control boards do not. Past about ten years, the question is sometimes not what a part costs but whether it exists.
The matching problem. In a built-in or paneled set, replacing one unit can mean replacing more than one. That belongs in the math before the failure, not after.
The "installed the same week" problem
Here is the thing that turns a manageable expense into a bad two years.
In most houses, the appliances did not arrive one at a time. They arrived as a package: a builder's allowance, a kitchen remodel, a flip, or a move-in where somebody replaced everything at once. Which means they all have the same birthday.
Look back at the ranking. The middle of that list, refrigerator through dishwasher, clusters between roughly nine and fifteen years. If everything went in together, those service lives overlap, and a house that has been quiet for a decade can produce three replacements inside eighteen months. Nothing went wrong. They are all doing exactly what the table said they would.

Three honest responses. Stagger deliberately, replacing the weakest link a year early on purpose so the cluster spreads out. Budget for it as one known expense over two years rather than three surprises. Or cover it, which is a real option and the reason this category exists.
What is covered, and what is not
Worth being plain about, because this gets muddled constantly.
A home service contract covers mechanical failure of appliances from normal wear and use. That is the useful thing it does, and it is exactly what the ranking above describes.
Homeowners insurance covers sudden accidental damage: fire, storm, theft, a sudden water discharge. If a washer hose bursts, the damage to your floor is generally the insurance conversation and the washer generally is not. Different products, different problems, neither a substitute for the other.
And what nothing covers: cosmetic damage, racks and shelves and knobs and handles, improper installation or a prior bad repair, routine maintenance, and anything already broken when the contract was purchased. Every legitimate contract excludes pre-existing conditions and carries a waiting period, commonly around 30 days. An appliance that is dead today is not a coverage question. It is a shopping question.

Build the register
Twenty minutes with your phone. Photograph the model and serial plate on every appliance, which lives inside the door on a refrigerator or dishwasher, on the back or side of a washer or dryer, and inside the drawer frame on a range. Note the install date if you know it. One folder.
That folder answers the only question that matters here, which is not "what is wrong with it" but "how old is it." If you just bought the house, the first thirty days is the right time to do the same for the systems.
Then count how many of your appliances are past the midpoint of their range. If the answer is one, you have room. If the answer is five and they all went in the same week, you already know what the next two years look like, and the only open question is how you would rather pay for it.
