Timing belt or timing chain?
The mainstream engines in this line use a timing chain. A chain is generally designed to last the service life of the engine, which is why chain engines usually carry no timing entry on the maintenance schedule at all. What to know about this model line
Offered with turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder and turbocharged 3.0 liter inline six engines, twin turbocharged 4.4 liter V8s in 550i, M550i and M5 trims, a 3.0 liter inline six diesel for a few mid decade years, and hybrid and later plug in hybrid variants, depending on year and trim. Every gasoline engine offered from 2012 forward is turbocharged, the 2024 line adds the fully electric i5 alongside the gasoline cars, and transmissions are an eight speed torque converter automatic with a six speed manual and a dual clutch offered on a small number of trims and years.
